01 / The opportunity
A design is ready. Where does it go next?
People wanted to publish where their audiences and businesses already were. But supporting another destination could mean another bespoke integration. Legacy publishing extensions were tied to the editor; SDK apps could export, but needed to build their own publishing flow.
I brought the Intents vision to the Publish team alongside Oly and Offy, our product manager. We worked through a different approach: make publishing a reusable capability, with a familiar experience that could support many partners and more Canva surfaces over time.
02 / The key decision
Decide what stays consistent, and what can change.
I worked with design and engineering to shape the initial API contract: the agreement between Canva and each publishing app. Drawing that boundary was as much an experience decision as a technical one.
Canva would manage common controls such as format, page selection and publishing progress. Partners would build their destination-specific settings with the App UI Kit and provide a preview that felt like their platform. This kept the journey familiar while leaving room for different publishing needs.

Make the destination visible before publishing.
A file preview alone could not tell someone how their post would feel on another platform. I guided the preview pattern so partners could show that context, while preserving clear loading, settings and confirmation states. People needed confidence in what they were about to share.
03 / Leading delivery
Help another team build with a platform mindset.
I coached Oly through the detailed pattern, gave daily feedback and worked through stakeholder decisions with the Publish team. A large part of my role was making extensibility practical: showing how a decision for one app would affect the next ten.
Partner work across LinkedIn, Instagram and Meta helped us test that balance. We shared SDK capabilities, UI patterns and guidance so the Publish team and partners could carry the model into their own experiences.

04 / Impact
More destinations. Less work between design and publication.
The work grew into tens of publishing apps, enabling thousands of designs to reach third-party platforms. Customers could configure, preview and publish inside Canva, while partners gained a shared foundation for bringing their platforms into the experience.
For the teams, the lasting change was a repeatable way to build together. The Publish team could own its customer experience while extending the platform with Ecosystem, rather than treating every partner as a separate product.
The public developer beta was announced on November 6, 2025, followed by general availability on January 30, 2026.
